Course offered for Jewish women

The Rosh Chodesh Society, an international Jewish sisterhood organized by the Chabad- Lubavitch movement’s Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, will launch a new course, “Portrait of a Woman: Seven Dimensions of the Feminine Mystique” for seven Sundays starting Dec. 4 at Chabad of Thousand Oaks, 2060- I Avenida de Los Arboles.

The teacher is Shula Bryski.

The course takes women on an in-depth exploration of seven feminine strengths and abilities and examines ways in which students can apply these principles in their daily life. The goal is for each woman to walk away with a sense of self-awareness and empowerment.

The sessions will draw from a spectrum of mystical and classical Jewish texts to illuminate the feminine powers.

The course is for women at all levels of Jewish knowledge. Participants do not need any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. The class is open to the public, and attendees need not be a member of any particular synagogue.

The Rosh Chodesh Society is a sisterhood dedicated to inspiring Jewish women through monthly cultural learning experiences.

Mexican Xmas story retold

California Lutheran University students and staff will join community members to reenact the Christmas story in the Mexican tradition of Las Posadas from 7 to 9 p.m. Sun., Dec. 4 on the campus at 60 W. Olsen Road.

The festive Mexican tradition dates back to the 16th century. Students representing Mary and Joseph will travel by donkey through campus seeking shelter for the birth of their son.

Other students, staff and visitors holding candles will walk with them from the Pavilion on the north side of Memorial Parkway near Pioneer Avenue to the Lundring Events Center in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center.

The free evening will conclude with a piñata and refreshments of Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce (sweet breads).

Methodists celebrate Advent

The community is invited to a Christmas concert and Advent celebration at 4:30 p.m. Sun., Dec. 4 in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church of Westlake Village, 1049 S. Westlake Blvd., Westlake Village.

Nine vocal and handbell choirs, from kindergarten to adults, will present special selections for the season.

The program will also include the musical “Gifts from the Heart” by Joanne Brown Le Doux and Betty Wilson.

After the program those attending can go outside to see the lighting of the creche scene on the church lawn at the southwest corner of Hampshire Road and Westlake Boulevard.

Following that, dinner will be served for a donation in Alton Hall.

Church presents musical nativity

“ Come to the Manger,” a musical presentation on the birth of Jesus, will be presented during the 11 a.m. worship hour on Sat., Dec. 10 the Simi Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1636 Sinaloa Road.

The audience will participate in carol singing. Guests are asked to bring a donation of nonperishable food for families in need in the community.
