New Women’s Course Explores the Heart of Jewish Prayer
A new course for women, A Work of Heart: Between Me and G-d—How Jewish Prayer Unites Heaven and Earth, is set to uncover the fascinating wisdom, mystical truths, clarity of purpose, and intricate structure that form the foundation of Jewish prayer.
The Rosh Chodesh Society (RCS), the women’s division of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), launched this innovative course in Fall 2024. Chabad of Union County in Scotch Plains is excited to bring it to our local community.
A Work of Heart takes participants beyond the words of the prayer book, the rituals of prayer services, and the walls of the synagogue. It reveals the beating heart of prayer—a personal, transformative experience that empowers self-discovery and deepens one's connection with G-d. Prayer is presented as an art form, a practical tool for personal growth, and an enriching journey that unites Heaven and Earth.
“Jews are a people of prayer,” says RCS director Mrs. Shaindy Jacobson. “From the biblical stories of Rebecca praying for children, Deborah singing her victory prayer, and Esther leading a nation in fervent prayer, our tradition has always celebrated the power of connection through prayer. Like any specialized art, prayer must be learned to truly appreciate its depth and beauty.”
The seven-part course, held monthly, is designed for women at all levels of Jewish knowledge and experience.
“Maimonides teaches that prayer is a daily obligation rooted in the Torah’s command to ‘serve G-d with all your heart,’” explains Malky Blesofsky of Scotch Plains. “In Judaism, prayer is not just an instinctive appeal or a regulated duty—it is a live, personal connection with G-d. Through A Work of Heart, we’ll explore prayer as a transformative journey and a moment of empowerment. I warmly invite you to join me in this beautiful experience.”
The Rosh Chodesh Society is an international Jewish sisterhood that connects, empowers, and inspires Jewish women through monthly learning and cultural experiences.
